KARAMBIT

 KARAMBIT

Karambit is believed to have originally been armed among the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra[2] where, according to folklore, it was inspired by tiger claws. Like most weapons in the region, it was originally a farming tool designed to rake roots, collect threshing and grow rice across much of the island of Southeast Asia. It is a smaller variant of the Southeast Asian sickle (Philippine garab and karit; Indonesian sickle, sickle, or sickle; and Malaysian sickle). When armed, the blade becomes more curved to maximize cutting potential. Through Indonesia's trade networks and close contacts with neighboring countries, karambit weapons eventually spread through what is now Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and the Philippines.

Culturally, karambit was the subject of humiliation in Java because of its history as a weapon of the agrarian peasantry, in contrast to the ksatria (warrior class) who were trained in the kraton or kraton. European records tell that soldiers in Indonesia were armed with kris on their waists or backs and spears in their hands, while karambit was used as a last resort when other fighters' weapons were lost in battle. The famous Sulawesi Bugis warrior is famous for his karambit hugs. Today it is one of the main weapons of silat and is commonly used in Filipino martial arts as well.

At first glance, karambit resembles jambiyah but has nothing to do with it. Jambiyah were always designed as weapons and functioned as status markers, often made by skilled craftsmen and jewelers using precious stones and metals, while karambit was and still is a simple farmer's tool and useful utility knife.
