KATANA

 KATANA

A katana is a long sword, although in Japan it refers to any type of sword. Katana is the kunyomi (Japanese name) of the kanji form, while the onyomi (Chinese name) of the kanji character is tō. It refers to the special single-edged, curved sword traditionally used by Japanese samurai.

The katana is usually paired with a wakizashi or shōtō, similar in shape but shortened, both worn by members of the knight class. The two weapons worn together were called daishō, and represented the social power and personal honor of the samurai. Long swords are used for open combat, while shorter ones are used as side arms, more suitable for stabbing, close combat, and seppuku (a form of ritual suicide).

The katana is mainly used for cutting, and is preferably worn with two hand grips. Unlike most swords from any country, the Katana has a different way of placing it on the wearer's hip, unlike other swords which bear the blade with the blade pointing downwards, the katana is just the opposite, the blade is pointed upwards, this is meant to make it easier for a samurai to do this. His activities, including blood oaths, were simply simply pulling the hilt of the sword and scraping the thumb against the blade. While the practical art of using the sword for its original purpose was obsolete, kenjutsu and laijutsu turned into modern martial arts.

Authentic Japanese swords today are rare items, although truly antique ones can be obtained at very high prices. Modern katana and wakizashi are made by only a few licensed practitioners who still craft these weapons today, although katanas are also rare. In Indonesia the katana is usually called the samurai.
